In the Metadata tab under the Timeline section, AppTweak tracks all of the metadata updates of any app in the app stores, as well as A/B tests & Promotional Content for Android apps, and Product Page Optimization (PPO) & In-App Events for iOS apps. This section contains a wealth of information on your competitor's ASO strategy.
⚡️ Android apps: Metadata updates, A/B tests (and % of traffic distribution), Promotional Content. We directly receive this data from the Google Play Store.
⚡️ iOS apps: Metadata updates, Product Page Optimization tests (and % of traffic distribution), In-App Events. We directly receive this data from the App Store.
In the ASO Timeline, you can easily monitor when and how often competitors update their app's metadata. Every dot in the timeline indicates a version or metadata update. The color codes represent the following:
Green – the app made an update in its store listing
Orange – the app has been running an A/B test or PPO
Orange filled with green – the app is running an A/B test or PPO on one metadata element, and an update on another one
Purple – the app is running Promotional Content or an In-App Event
Track competitors' metadata updates
By default, the selected date range shows the total number of updates in the last 90 days. You can always change the date range in the top right corner.
Hover over the colored dots to see which elements were updated.
When you click on those dots, you can actually view the updates and even compare the before/after changes.
Monitor A/B tests & PPO (product page optimization)
You can view A/B tests or PPO tests when you hover over the orange bar.
When you click on the orange bar, you can view which A/B tests are currently running for these metadata elements.
We display the current version and also all of the different running variants the app is testing out.
How we detect winning A/B test variants
When you spot an app running an A/B test, you might see a "winner" badge next to one of the variants. This indicates that this variant has outperformed the others, and this metadata element has been applied to the app's live page.
Here is how we identify the winning version of an A/B test or PPO:
We check if they finished the A/B test.
The next day, we check if the app updated the metadata they were testing.
If the new metadata matches one of the variants, we say that variant won.
Note that the “winner” tag is only available for tests run after 28 April, 2025
See in-app events & promotional content
The Purple dots show you when there is an in-app event (iOS) or promotional content (Android) running.
When you click on the purple bar, you can view which in-app events (or promotional content) is currently running for this app.
We display the in-app events (or promotional content) that were running on these dates.
Apple limits users to 5 in-app events running at the same time; Google doesn't have an upper limit for promotional content. As a result, we show the below scale when we detect more than 5 Promotional Content for your app or your competitor. The darker the shade, the more promotional content running across this date.

What do you consider a metadata update?
Every day our tool scans all the app pages in our database. When we notice a metadata element has changed we consider this a metadata update.
⚠️ AppTweak only fetches the metadata changes for apps and competitors followed in our database. Make sure you add the app to your dashboard in order to track all of its metadata changes. If the app isn't followed, AppTweak will only show changes in versions.
